The terms 'analogous architecture' and 'old-new architecture' are key aspects of the teaching of Miroslav Sik at the ETH Zurich. During his first period there (1983-1991), Sik worked as Senior Assistant at the Chair of Fabio Reinhart and was in effect the spokesman of an architectural movement that became renowned far beyond the borders of Switzerland and is still influential today. In 1986/1991, the compact movement presented itself to the public with a touring exhibition and an accompanying large-scale 'Swiss Box', including chalk perspective drawings of its projects. Miroslav Sik worked as a Full Professor at the ETH Zurich between 1999 and 2018 during his second period there. Since the 1990s, Sik's theory and teaching have formed an important pillar of Swiss and international architectural history. This extensive volume contains the best 90/120 works respectively by students from both periods of Miroslav Sik's teaching, including plans, project descriptions and perspective diagrams. Some of the presented students went on to become renowned contemporary Swiss architects. This volume also includes the most important manifesto-like texts by Miroslav Sik and enlightening essays on the movement of analogous and old-new architecture. SELLING POINTS: * Miroslav Sik's theory and teaching have formed an important pillar of Swiss and international architectural history since the 1990s * A detailed and illustrated monograph on an important architect, pioneer of the compact movement 300 illustrations and 200 plans

Pablo Horvath pursues an architectural direction in which the craftsmanship contrasts with the language of the elegant and trendy design. He has designed a number of remarkable buildings since 1993, among them two idiosyncratic multi-family houses in Chur (2004), and the extension of the school facility in Riom-Parsonz (2006). Vitruvian Man

Professionalism is political. This book offers a new assessment of the Roman architect Vitruvius and his treatise, On Architecture, dedicated to Augustus in the 20s BCE. Once reviled by scholars, Vitruvius emerges as an imperial expert par excellence when read alongside literary coevals through an intertextual lens. No building of Vitruvius' name survives from antiquity, but his treatise remains a formidable literary construction that partakes of Rome's vibrant textual culture. The book explores Vitruvius' portrait of the ideal architect as an imposing "Vitruvian man" at the dawn of Augustus' empire. In direct dialogue with his republican model, Cicero's ideal orator, the architect embodies a distinctly imperial civic ethos in which technically skilled partisans supersede old elites as guarantors of Augustan authority. Vitruvius promises to shape not only the emperor's legacy with architecture, but also the notion of a Roman citizen through his ideal architect.

Film Noir And Los Angeles

This book combines urban theory with film studies and cultural theory to explore how twentieth century Los Angeles is configured through the lens of film noir. The author examines how an alternate spatial and urban history of Los Angeles is forged through the fictional modes of detective fiction, film noir and neo noir. These depictions are analyzed decade by decade, from the 1940s to the new millennium, through the leitmotif of noir and key titles ranging from Double Indemnity in 1944 to in Inherent Vice in 2015. By employing these fictional elements as the basis for historicising the city’s unrivalled urban form, the analysis demonstrates an innovative form of urban historiography, and reveals some of the earliest characteristics of postmodern expression and representation in Hollywood cinema. This book will be of great relevance to students and researchers working in the fields of film, literature, cultural and urban studies. It will also be of interest to scholars researching the twentieth century history of Los Angeles and the city’s place in crime fiction, classical film noir and neo noir.
