Anything Goes traces the life and career of John Barrowman, from his Glaswegian childhood and American adolescence to his first big break starring alongside Elaine Paige in Anything Goes. Since then, John has made a name for himself with outstanding West End achievements, including an Olivier Award nomination, and success in the movies The Producers and De-Lovely. His triumphant transition into television was confirmed when Torchwood won a Best Drama BAFTA. John also lays bare his personal life: his emigration as a child, coming out to his family and his 2006 civil partnership with long-term boyfriend Scott Gill. Anything Goes is revelatory and insightful, told with real heart and characteristic Barrowman charm. This is a wonderful tale of how one boy achieved his dreams.

Bracketed by the catastrophes of the Great War and the Wall Street Crash, 1920s America was a place of drama, tension and hedonism. It glittered and seduced: jazz, flappers, wild all-night parties, the birth of Hollywood, and a glamorous gangster-led crime scene flourishing under prohibition. But the period was also punctuated by momentous events - the political show trials of Sacco and Vanzetti; the huge Ku Klux Klan march down Washington DC's Pennsylvania Avenue - and it produced a splendid array of writers, musicians and film stars, from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Bessie Smith and Charlie Chaplin.

Ethan Mordden has been hailed as "a sharp-eared listener and a discerning critic," by Opera News, which compares his books to "dinner with a knowledgeable, garrulous companion." The "preeminent historian of the American musical" (New York Times), he "brings boundless energy and enthusiasm buttressed by an arsenal of smart anecdotes" (Wall Street Journal). Now Mordden offers an entirely fresh and infectiously delightful history of American musical theatre. Anything Goes stages a grand revue of the musical from the 1700s through to the present day, narrated in Mordden's famously witty, scholarly, and conversational style. He peers with us over Stephen Sondheim's shoulder as he composes at the piano. He places us in a bare rehearsal room as the cast of Oklahoma! changes history by psychoanalyzing the plot in the greatest of the musical's many Dream Ballets. And he gives us tickets for orchestra seats on opening night-raising the curtain on the pleasures of Victor Herbert's The Red Mill and the thrill of Porgy and Bess. Mordden examines the music, of course, but also more neglected elements. Dance was once considered as crucial as song; he follows it from the nineteenth century's zany hoofing to tap "combinations" of the 1920s, from the injection of ballet and modern dance in the 1930s and '40s to the innovations of Bob Fosse. He also explores the changing structure of musical comedy and operetta, and the evolution of the role of the star. Fred Stone, the avuncular Scarecrow in the Wizard of Oz, seldom varied his acting from part to part; but the versatile Ethel Merman turned the headlining role inside out in Gypsy, playing a character who was selfish, fierce, and destructive. From "ballad opera" to burlesque, from Fiddler on the Roof to Rent, the history and lore of the musical unfolds here in a performance worthy of a standing ovation.

'anything goes...' is the story of Siddhartha, a currency trader, who lived his life betting on economies to rise or fall; while he profited with every rise and every fall. He left it all after a tragic accident. It is the story of a man who loved but was cheated of it. It is a hymn to a man who saw death and wished to return to life. The author illustrates a game for Siddhartha to place his final trade in life; a bet on wisdom to see power fall; a bet on people to see the biggest institution of mankind fall. A trade which he hoped would bring about a revolution. A revolution to change the world forever! It is the story of a hero that lives inside each of us. It is a story of a sacrifice that would be remembered forever.

Anything Goes is an unusual and a hilarious collection of short stories by the author Martin Dec Haynes F.R.C.S. who is also a poet, a surgeon, golfer, philatelist and humorist. Because of the author’s vast working experience lots of his stories have a medical theme, but you can rest assured that, coming from Haynes, they are not run-of-the-mill, nay rather they are extremely esoteric and virtually beyond belief. Near the end of the book the writing style takes a detour and a few yarns are narrated as if by idiot types who misspell words, or some of the words are written as they are pronounced, adding greatly to the farcical effect. The last story is about a young man who leaves his wife behind in The Islands, and goes to London to study medicine successfully; then he divorces his island-wife from a distance and takes a spanking new English wife. He is now about to return to his native island but his grandfather is waiting at the airport with a shotgun to blow out his brains. Fortunately, other family members are able to avert the disaster. All in all the collection is a riproaring read.

Anything Goes finds Garven Wilsonhulme, a boyish prankster, champion college wrestler, and sociopathic driven competitor struggling his way to the pinnacle of success in his university life. There is nothing he will not do to get into medical school--nothing. He is willing to use his friends, destroy his enemies, lie, cheat, and steal to get there if that is what it takes. Anything Goes is the story of how that success is achieved and at what cost--to himself, to his family, and even to his friends. That cost includes alienating the most prominent professor at Stanford, which is only the beginning of his willingness to take on all comers.

As the Hopkins family return home from Africa, more than a few changes are in store... Anything Goes is an evocative tale of life in the 1960s for one Manchester family. Perfect for fans of Nadine Dorries and Dilly Court. It's December 1963 when Billy Hopkins and his wife Laura arrive home in Manchester after five years in Africa. The world has changed beyond recognition: it's the swinging sixties, with headlines full of the Beatles and the pill, LSD and miniskirts. Billy's youngest son still believes in Santa Claus and while his daughter's reading Jackie, she's not even a teenager yet, so Billy's not too worried about the impact of modern society on his family. He's more concerned about the welfare of his increasingly forgetful father and about the daily challenges he faces as a college lecturer. When the four junior Hopkins start to choose their own, unexpected paths in life, though, Billy finds it harder than usual to see the funny side of things... What readers are saying about Anything Goes: 'Billy Hopkins' good humour and personal philosophy of life shine through from first to last' 'Billy Hopkins succeeds in reeling off a veritable kaleidoscope of personalities, items and artefacts that make the reader feel positively homesick for those vanished days of yesteryear' 'The style of the books is like life itself, sometimes sad, sometimes funny, but seen through Billy Hopkins's wry humour and perceptive observations it is a delightful good-feel read'
