Certain stable lipid nanoemulsions, existing in natural waters and certain artificial media, display - upon intravenous injection - a marked capability for rapid active targeting, both to tumors and to certain lesion sites. This category of lipid nanoemulsions contains no phospholipids, no proteins nor peptides, no carbohydrates, and no chemical modification of the lipophilic drugs is required; consequently it avoids various past problems reported for earlier versions of targeted nanoemulsions. The book covers in detail the underlying chemical and biochemical principles of stable lipid nanoemulsions as well as many current and potential applications in nanomedicine such as targeted chemotherapy. It is in harmony with goals of the current US National Nanotechnology Initiative, which include nanomedical approaches to drug delivery that focus on developing nanoscale particles to improve drug bioavailability i.e. often using targeted nanoparticles for delivering drugs with cell precision and less side effects. Despite the obvious practical importance to various fields including nanomedicine there is currently no comprehensive book available in the literature. The proposed book will effectively fill this gap. Detailed coverage of the underlying chemical and biochemical principles of stable lipid nanoemulsions. The book includes many current and potential applications in nanomedicine such as targeted chemotherapy. Contains 67 figures (including 13 microscope photos) and 26 tables Over 1200 literature references, many of them of very recent date.

Small solid particles adsorbed at liquid interfaces arise in many industrial products and process, such as anti-foam formulations, crude oil emulsions and flotation. They act in many ways like traditional surfactant molecules, but offer distinct advantages. However, the understanding of how these particles operate in such systems is minimal. This book brings together the diverse topics actively being investigated, with contributions from leading experts in the field. After an introduction to the basic concepts and principles, the book divides into two sections. The first deals with particles at planar liquid interfaces, with chapters of an experimental and theoretical nature. The second concentrates on the behaviour of particles at curved liquid interfaces, including particle-stabilized foams and emulsions and new materials derived from such systems. This collection will be of interest to academic researchers and graduate students in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, pharmacy, food science and materials science.

Bijels

File Size: 63,28 MB
Format: PDF, Kindle

Bicontinuous interfacially jammed emulsion gels, now commonly termed ‘bijels’ are a class of soft materials, in which interpenetrating, continuous domains of two immiscible fluids are maintained in a rigid arrangement by a jammed layer of colloidal particles at their interface. Such gels have unusual material properties that promise exciting applications across diverse fields from energy materials and catalysis, to food science. This is the first book on the subject and provides the reader with a fundamental introduction to the field. Edited by Paul Clegg, a recognised authority on bijels, the reader will learn about the bijel and its formation. Starting with three component systems, the reader will be introduced to systems using only two liquids and colloidal particles before moving onto more complex systems with additional components. These systems are looked at via both experimental and simulation studies, explaining phase separation kinetics, structure formation, properties and functionalisation. A closing section on bijel production using flow explores thin film and bulk structure formation relevant to larger scale materials design. Bringing together current understanding this book aims to bring the potential application of bijels to diverse materials challenges closer to fruition. This is a must-have resource for anyone working in soft matter and applied fields. Foreword by Michael E. Cates, Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge.

ASM International and The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS) have collaborated to present a collection of the selected works of Dr. Greg B. Olson in honor of his 70th birthday in 2017. This collection highlights his influential contributions to the understanding of martensite transformations and the development and application of a systems design approach to materials. Part I: Martensite, with an Introduction by Sir Harry Bhadeshia, emphasizes Dr. Olson's work to develop a dislocation theory for martensite transformations, to improve the understanding of the statistical nature of martensite nucleation, and to expand use of quantitative microscopy to characterize phase transformations. Part II: Materials Design, with an Introduction by Dr. Charles Kuehmann, focuses on the application of a systems design approach to materials and the development of integrated computational design curriculum for undergraduate education. Part II includes several examples of the systems design approach to a variety of applications. The papers chosen for this collection were selected by the editors with input from Dr. Olson.

Two key words define the scope of this book: 'ultrasound' and 'colloids'. Historically, there has been little real communication between practitioners in these two fields. Although there is a large body of literature devoted to ultrasound phenomenon in colloids, there is little recognition that such phenomena may be of real importance for both the development and applications of colloid science. On the other side, colloid scientists have not embraced acoustics as an important tool for characterizing colloids. The lack of any serious dialogue between these scientific fields is the biggest motivation behind this book. - Covers in detail this multidisciplinary field combining acoustics, electroacoustics, colloid science, analytical chemistry and rheology - Provides a bibliography with more than 1,000 references - Presents theories and their experimental verification, as well as analysis of the methods and hardware pertaining to applications such as pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and polymers
