The question I grappled with was how to move students from "couch-potato" readers who can answer basic questions with one word-to readers who think while reading-to readers who think beyond their reading. -Aimee Buckner In Notebook Know-How, Aimee Buckner demonstrated the power of notebooks to spark and capture students' ideas in the writing workshop. In Notebook Connections, she turns her focus to the reading workshop, showing how to transform those "couch-potato" readers into deep thinkers. Buckner's fourth-grade students use reader's notebooks as a place to document their thinking and growth, to support their thinking for group discussions, and to explore their own ideas about a text without every entry being judged as evidence of their reading progress. Buckner describes her model as flexible enough for students to respond in a variety of ways yet structured enough to provide explicit instruction. Notebook Connections leads teachers through the process of launching, developing, and fine-tuning a reader's notebook program. Teacher-guided lessons in every chapter help students create anchor texts for their notebooks using various comprehension and writing strategies. As students become more proficient, they grow more independent in their thinking and responses and will begin to select the strategies that work best for them. In the process, the notebook becomes a bridge that helps students make connections between ideas, texts, strategies, and their work as readers and writers. Notebook Connections, filled with lesson ideas and assessment tips, provides a comprehensive model for making reader's notebooks the centerpiece of your reading workshop.

Notebook Sermons By: Loretta Ellen Edwards Loretta Ellen Edwards, not her real name of course, does not want to be connected to her stories. Not because she is ashamed, she wishes for her theories to sink or swim based on the truth rather than her personality, the way she dresses, or any other mortal opinion. For a long time, Edwards has thought Christians have been following a well worn path without any thought of where they were going or why. When their religion does not make sense, they shrug their shoulders and think, It must be true. Everyone believes this way. Notebook Sermons are short, easy-to-read stories that will challenge readers’ thoughts and beliefs. Edwards asks that you do not believe her, but rather think for yourself! “The kingdom of heaven is within you.” Find the answers that will make you a true believer. This thought-provoking work is a great way to fill time between activities and can be used in a study group to discuss among others. You may just find answers to questions you had never thought to ask.

How can psychotherapists apply the wealth of recent research in Positive Psychology to their clinical work to help their clients change in positive directions? Bill Oâe(tm)Hanlon, who originated Solution-Oriented Therapy in the early 1980s, and Bob Bertolino, an experienced clinician, build the bridge between positive psychology and psychotherapy in this book that allows readers to focus on the mental, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual health of their clients. Following the highly readable and user-friendly approach of the Therapist Notebooks, this book contains 75 activities, exercises, and handouts throughout seven chapters that therapists can implement both in sessions and as activities outside the therapeutic milieu. Among the many attractive features included are: exercises that follow a standard format for ease of use and implementation research findings that underscore the importance of focusing on strengths and well-being overviews and suggestions for use that flank each exercise and contextualize them. Readers appreciate the breadth of research and literature covered, the interactive exercises that both clients and clinicians can use, and devices presented to help translate research into practice, such as the P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. Framework and The Happiness Hypothesis. For mental health practitioners who are interested in building resilience and strength, both within their clients and within themselves, this book is indispensable.

Northrop Frye S Late Notebooks 1982 1990

An inveterate notebook keeper, Northrop Frye continually jotted down his ideas and thoughts as he worked through the complex schemes of his criticism. Volumes 5 and 6 of the Collected Works are the notebooks that he kept while writing his two final books, "Words with Power" and "The Double Vision". They provide a record of what he was reading and thinking as he struggled with the implications of those projects. In a sense they are the workshops out of which the books were constructed. While focusing on the works-in-progress, the 3684 entries presented here range over diverse territory, never failing to surprise, delight, and provoke. In these notebooks, for instance, we find comments triggered by a detective story Frye is reading, a lecture he has to prepare, a glance at the books on his shelves, a quotation he remembers, a letter received, or the memory of a trip. In many respects, the notebooks reveal a Frye who is quite different from the critic who made his reputation with "Fearful Symmetry" and "Anatomy of Criticism", displaying aspects of his personality and thought that are not apparent in his books and essays. The notebooks show us the unbuttoned Frye, a complex man capable of both spiritual transcendence and hard-headed pragmatism. Here, for instance, his criticism of Catholicism is far more acerbic than in anything he published. Likewise, his rejection of both Marxist and feminist ideology is far more pointed than elsewhere. These two volumes include seven of Frye's handwritten notebooks and five collections of his typed notebooks - all previously unpublished. The material is the record of an extraordinary intellectual odyssey, an odyssey that is, at its base, deeply spiritual.
