Derby Day at Epsom Downs. A multitude of people crowd to watch the races: dukes and dustmen, bishops and beggars, privileged ladies and prostitutes. The gamut of Victorian society and a hotbed for crime and crooks of all kinds. With the nation a-flutter in the run up to this national event, a disembodied head is discovered on a passenger train at Crewe; the first in a murky course of events that takes in murder, fraud and race-fixing. Detective Inspector Robert Colbeck and his assistant are assigned to the case and are soon snarled up in a web of skulduggery stretching across the country. They are forced to ask themselves, just how much is someone prepared to hazard to win?

International development has its origins in the histories of nineteenth and early twentieth-century European colonisation. What happens when a leading colonial power decides to transform a model tropical colony, relying on head-loading of goods as the predominant form of transport, into a modern market economy on the back of the greatest British industrial ingenuity of the time - railways? In this meticulously researched book, Komla Tsey brings to light the historical origins of a wide range of issues confronting present-day international development researchers and policy-makers, such as technology transfer, wealth creation versus equity of access, and ways to evaluate the benefits of development work, especially across cultures. In the context of the early twenty-first-century international investment interests in resource-rich Africa, Tsey argues, forensic historical research is required to determine the precise nature and scale of the financial and humanitarian injustices committed by British colonialists during the construction of major public works projects. More than providing opportunities to take possible legal actions for reparations, this research should also serve as a reminder to present-day African policy-makers and their international and local business partners that the injustices and blatant abuses of power of the past should never be repeated.

"This book is primarily a collection of professional photographs showing how the railroads coped with the tremendous surge of traffic engendered by World War II. Prime attraction of course is the reappearance of the steam engine on the rails of the land, and the few diesels shown are of a vintage considered historical by today's collectors. To transport war materiel and personnel, all equipment was needed. In fact much of it, after years of Depression-bred neglect, was in poor condition for the four-year wartime stint. This was a period of great opportunity for all photographers, but one among them, Jack Delano, was assigned by the U.S. Office of War Information to make a definitive study of wartime railroading." --From back cover of jacket.

During the Civil War, President Lincoln signs a bill (Pacific Railroad Act of 1 July 1862) that authorizes the construction of a transcontinental railroad. When the war ends, Davy Brandon joins the Union Pacific as a surveyor and meets Miriam, his childhood sweetheart, whose father is in charge of construction. Davy and Peter Jesson, a civil engineer, fight over Miriam; and subsequently, Miriam refuses Davy's offer of marriage. When a band of Indians, led by the renegade Deroux, attack a construction train, Davy recognizes Deroux as his father's murderer and kills him in a hand-to-hand fight. Davy then joins the Central Pacific, which is racing the Union Pacific to the center of the continent. The joining of the two railroads by the golden spike is accompanied by the union of Davy and Miriam.

Next day John Marrot spent the brief period of repose accorded by the doctor to his leg in rompingabout the house with the baby in his arms. Being a large man, accustomed to much elbow-room andrapid motion, and the house being small, John may be said to have been a dangerous character in thefamily on such occasions. Apart from baby, no elephant was ever more sluggish in his motions; butwhen coupled-professionally speaking-to his own tender infant, John knew no bounds, his wifeknew no rest and his baby knew no higher earthly bliss.Sometimes it was on his shoulder, sometimes on his head and often on his foot, riding with railwayspeed to "Banbury Cross." Again it was on its back in the crib or on the bed being tickled into fitsof laughter, which bid fair at times to merge into fits of convulsion, to the horror of little Gertie, who came in for a large share of that delightful holiday's enjoyment, but whose spirit was frequentlyharrowed with alarm at the riotous conduct of her invalid father. In his glee the man might havebeen compared to a locomotive with a bad driver, who was constantly shutting off the steam andclapping on the brakes too soon or too late, thus either falling short of or overshooting his mark. What between the door and the dresser, the fire, the crib, the window, and the furniture, Johnshowed himself a dreadfully bad pilot and was constantly running into or backing out of difficulties. At last towards the afternoon of that day, while performing a furious charge round the room withbaby on his head, he overturned the wash-tub, which filled the baby with delirious joy, and Gertiewith pleasurable alarm. As for Mrs Marrot, she was too happy to have her husband at home for a whole day to care muchabout trifles, nevertheless she felt it her duty to reprove him, lest the children should learn a badlesson."There now, John, I knew you'd do it at last. You're much too violent, and you shouldn't ought torisk the baby's neck in that way. Such a mess! How can you expect me to keep things tidy if you goon so?
