In 1963, Gerry and the Pacemakers made pop-music history. Their first three singles, “How Do You Do It?”, “I Like It” and “You'll Never Walk Alone”, went to the top of the UK charts, creating a still-unbeaten record. For twenty-year-old Gerry Marsden it was the start of a long and colourful show-business career. A pioneer of the Liverpool pop explosion that reverberated around the world, he vowed to broaden his horizons and stay on stage for the rest of his life. Brought up in the tough Dingle district of Liverpool, Marsden was a street fighter and enthusiastic boxer, who left school at the age of fifteen to work as a railways delivery boy. Like thousands of teenagers in the 1950s he got the music bug, taught himself guitar, formed a group and joined the vibrant club circuit alongside the Beatles and hundreds of other young rock 'n' rollers. In 1962, Gerry and the Pacemakers were signed by manager Brian Epstein as his second group after the Beatles, and made their name with ballads like “Ferry Cross the Mersey” and “Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying” as well as raunchy pop. But it was a Rodgers & Hammerstein song, “You'll Never Walk Alone”, which had enthralled Marsden since he saw the film Carousel in his youth, that was their biggest hit. For three decades it has remained the anthem of the crowds at Liverpool Football Club, played before kick-off every Saturday, inscribed on the club gates and always the most popular concert request. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, Marsden released a version of “I'll Never Walk Alone” in tribute to the National Health Service. In this autobiography, reissued following his death in January 2021, Gerry Marsden emerges as a driven man, an artist with enormous confidence and a unique spirit. From his streetwise boyhood and early love of music to his friendship – and keen rivalry – with the Beatles, hunger for fame and hard-won success, his story is one of grit, warmth, humour and determination.

Death visited our family early in my youth, taking my father without warning, exacting its toll of loss and grief on me, my mom, and four siblings, leaving us all emotionally scarred. We loved Dad and grieved bitterly, surviving with feelings of desolation and sorrow as our strong family circle was forever broken; my sister, ten years old, was unable to comprehend "why Dad left her." God's Angel of Death would visit my family, inflicting the pain of sorrow and loss repeatedly, and in the years to come I would lose my mother, sister, and two younger brothers. I would later become estranged from my own family through divorce, and relocation would sever relationships, uprooting me from my career, the old familiar places and faces, plunging me back into sadness and loneliness, grim reminders of loss from the not distant past. In the middle of the storms I lost my auditory senses and had to adapt to an entirely new world that introduced fear and rejection, and at one point of my life I became fearful of dying suddenly. I realized, too much later, that I never really was ever alone; God was always with me and he was keeping me here, carrying, guiding, strengthening me through every storm, giving my life direction again, restoring me full-circle to his purpose for me--writing to tell of his love. It took a while for me to understand God's grace, how he led me through the years of stormy darkness to a relationship with him through love and mercy that is unsurpassed; and, while I am still working on life, a great part of its purpose is to share my hope and faith and attest to God's love and grace, but most of all to bear witness to the triumphant, peaceful joy of walking, talking with, and listening to God along the valleys and mountaintops of life.

Philip Rendell James, eighteen years of age, lost his parents in a car crash just after graduating from high school. Disappointed and disillusioned with life, he said his goodbyes to his sister and her husband and joined the Air Force. Philip thought he was in for the long haul, but you never know what God is going to do. One of his few trips home in eight years of being in the Air Force, Philip was at his nephew’s little league game, and it was love at first sight. Down a couple of bleachers and to the right was Arabella, her long chestnut-brown hair pulled back in a ponytail that bounced around when she swung her head back and forth. She was trying to make sense of this game. Sports was never something she had an interest in. When her coworker and friend, Betsy, invited her to come watch her son’s ball game on this beautiful Saturday afternoon, she decided to go. She didn’t have anything going on, and being outside on a sunny Saturday would be nice. She had spotted this handsome man in uniform, and looking from one end of the ball field to the other gave her the ability to catch a glimpse of him without being obvious. What pleased her more was that he was watching her. Philip was discharged from the Air Force one year later. He and Arabella married, had four children—Annabelle Marie, Sarah Louise, Philip Junior, and David Seth—all of whom are now grown and married with children and some with grandchildren of their own. Philip had passed away, and Arabella had just moved in with Sarah and her husband, Matthew. She had been living with Annabelle and her husband, Richard. Sarah grew up with a lot of unanswered questions. Feeling scared and sometimes very alone, she searched for answers. While making some right and some wrong decisions, she learned that God was always by her side. As Sarah gets ready for a big family party, the past comes back to haunt her. You will see how Sarah lets God be God and ends up settling for nothing less than God’s very best in her life. Annabelle, the oldest child, is very confident and outgoing. She is very sure of herself, but she learns that things are rarely what you assume they are. She needs God to carry her through an intimidating situation in her life. Philip Junior, the third child and the oldest boy, is very independent, self-assured, confident, and successful. Turning to God was the only way to get through this painful predicament that he and his family are going through. Things are never as they seem when looking at someone’s life, and judgment can sometimes be harsh. David, the youngest child of the four, may not be as successful as his big brother, but he doesn’t mind. David loves God, his family, and his job, but David learns he can trust God with anything. 1

When Lucy is given a beautiful ruby necklace by Pierre, a gorgeous man she's only just met, her life suddenly becomes much more complicated. But the necklace isn't Pierre's to give and he and Lucy are forced to flee from Albie Chan, the local Triad boss. With night-club owner and would-be gangster, Big Al also in pursuit, Lucy is drawn into Liverpool's shady underworld via a secret network of underground tunnels. Here we meet the enigmatic Aurora, her suave yet sinister assistant, and a band of strange little people. There's a kleptomaniac monkey called Fingers and an Abyssinian cat with a talent for tracking, which comes in handy when an odd little jade statue in the shape of a camel turns up. A possibly-forged painting is discovered and there's even a cameo appearance by 1980's pop star, Pete Burns, although these two things are not necessarily related. With mysteries to be solved and a few laughs along the way, this is a highly entertaining read which will leave you with a smile on your face. WARNING: Contains content of a sexual nature, some swearing and violence.

I walk alone. That is not down on the city streets where help or a sympathetic ear is never very far away, but solo up in the rough country where I have climbed over a thousand mountains. I have no claim to fame, expertise or celebrity status. I'm just an ordinary guy who endeavours to climb out of the ruts we call existence to tailor a life around trying to make it just that little more extraordinary. With hindsight, it has turned out that I was pretty good at it, so thought I could try and share the story. It's a gritty lifestyle and not for the faint-hearted but it is has been a fifty-year source for a humorous outlook on life that has been depicted in my art (the majority of which, like my walking, remains unseen). That is how I deal with everything from writing this book to resolving a life-threatening situation. Deal with it and then walk away. The experts will waste their time squabbling among themselves about whether I did right or wrong because I will already be a distant figure on the skyline facing the next choices...alone.

This study investigates the relationship between local walkability and physical activity and subsequent health outcomes among pregnant women - for whom walking is the recommended, and by far most common, form of exercise. Using an EPA measure of walkability at the county level and rich individual-level data on women from the 2011 BRFSS,we find that higher walkability translates into more physical activity among pregnant women (but not their non-pregnant counterparts). Furthermore, we also demonstrate that higher walkability leads to better pregnancy outcomes for both mothers and their babies. Using 2011 Natality Detail Files with geographic identifiers, we show that women residing in more walkable counties are less likely to experience gestational diabetes, hypertension, and excessive weight gain. They are also less likely to deliver macrosomic babies. Our study suggests more broadly that pregnant women's physical activity responds to factors that facilitate it and makes a difference. Keywords: Walkability, exercise, health outcomes, pregnancy"--Page [ii].
