One of the world's most beautiful endangered species, butterflies are as lucrative as gorillas, pandas, and rhinos on the black market. In this cutthroat $200 million business, no one was more successful—or posed a greater ecological danger—than Yoshi Kojima, the kingpin of butterfly smugglers. In Winged Obsession, author Jessica Speart tells the riveting true story of rookie U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agent Ed Newcomer's determined crusade to halt the career of a brazen and ingenious criminal with an almost supernatural sixth sense for survival. But the story doesn't end there. Speart chronicles her own attempts, while researching the book, to befriend Kojima before betraying him—unaware that the cagey smuggler had his own plans to make the writer a player in his illegal butterfly trade.

The sestina (of medieval French origin) is a complex poetic form of 39 lines (six sestets and a three-line "envoy") in which the six end-words (teleutons) of the lines of the first sestet stanza are repeated in a specific order as teleutons in the five succeeding sestets. In the envoy, the six teleutons are again picked up, one of them being buried in, and one finishing, each line. Because of the complexity of the form, the sestina fell out of favor with poets for several decades. However, a twenty-first century revival of the form is underway. This is the first anthology of sestinas that showcases both traditional and innovative examples of the form by modern and contemporary poets, award winners, and emerging writers alike. Organized by such themes as Americana; Art; Love and Sex; and Memory, Contemplation, Retrospection, and Death, the collection also includes sestinas with irregular teleutons and unconventional sestinas. An evocative introduction by Marilyn Krysl acquaints readers with the form. The volume concludes with useful indexes of first lines and teleutons, increasing access to the poems beyond the poets' names.

The world has always been fascinated with ancient Egypt. When the Romans conquered Egypt, it was really Egypt that conquered the Romans. Cleopatra captivated both Caesar and Marc Antony and soon Roman ladies were worshipping Isis and wearing vials of Nile water around their necks. What is it about ancient Egypt that breeds such obsession and imitation? Egyptomania explores the burning fascination with all things Egyptian and the events that fanned the flames--from ancient times, to Napoleon's Egyptian campaign, to the Discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb by Howard Carter in the 1920s. For forty years, Bob Brier, one of the world's foremost Egyptologists, has been amassing one of the largest collections of Egyptian memorabilia and seeking to understand the pull of ancient Egypt on our world today. In this original and groundbreaking book, with twenty-four pages of color photos from the author's collection, he explores our three-thousand-year-old fixation with recovering Egyptian culture and its meaning. He traces our enthrallment with the mummies that seem to have cheated death and the pyramids that seem as if they will last forever. Drawing on his personal collection — from Napoleon's twenty-volume Egypt encyclopedia to Howard Carter's letters written from the Valley of the Kings as he was excavating — this is an inventive and mesmerizing tour of how an ancient civilization endures in ours today.

Kenny Reid has avidly followed golf's majors for more than 30 years. Through the luminescent glow of his television screen, and even, on occasion, from the vantage point of the roped-off boundaries, he has watched the greats of the game stamp their mark in the history books of each of the golf world's premier tournaments. In 2009 he decided to go a step further, decided that it was time to live the dream of all golf enthusiasts - he embarked on a pilgrimage, a 'fan slam', to each of the four majors - the Masters, the US Open, The Open and the PGA Championship - all in a single year. "A Major Obsession" chronicles this golf fan's odyssey. In an effort to record every detail of the fan's experience at the majors at Bethpage, Augusta, Turnberry and Hazeltine, he experiences excitement, mishaps, surprises and feats of brilliance. Not a golf insider or writer, he records each championship's special feel and ambience from the everyday fan's point of view. The journey takes him to the heart of the spectator experience, comparing and contrasting each championship's highs-and-lows both on and off the course. It mixes the sublime with the ridiculous; the expected with the unexpected. Original, quirky and brilliantly insightful, this fan's-eye account of the best players and tournaments in the world is a must for all lovers of sport and of golf; it is entertainment, travelogue and user manual to the most spectacular golf tournaments in the world.

The Obsession is Seán Cavanagh's no-holds-barred account of his extraordinary, obsessive drive to dominate his sport. For the first time, we get up close and personal with the lowest ebbs and greatest highs of his glittering career as one of Gaelic football's era-defining players, and with the truth of what it takes to become a three-time All-Ireland and five-time All Star winner. For twenty years, Seán Cavanagh's relentless routine of train-play-repeat fed an insatiable quest for perfection and made him a permanent fixture in the Tyrone team. His fearless, uncompromising style led him to glory, but his obsession also took its toll on body and mind, and on those around him. As well as the highs that made it all worthwhile, there have been some shattering lows: the anguish and doubt of injury, hostility on and off the field of play, the despair at defeat in crucial games, and the nightmare of gossip hounding his family. In The Obsession, Seán Cavanagh opens up about the sacrifices and dedication needed to make it to the top. He takes us behind the scenes of the GAA: his controversial relationship with manager Mickey Harte, the brutal training regimes, the personal sacrifices and the tragedies that haunted him. He talks, too, of games won and lost, his iconic performance in Tyrone's victory against Kerry in the 2008 All-Ireland Final, the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship title win in February 2018 with Moy that capped an incredible career, the players and their rivalries, and his childhood during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Hard-hitting, provocative and compelling, The Obsession takes you inside the head of one of the most iconic and respected sportsmen of his time to reveal the competitive drive that made Seán Cavanagh a legend of the game and the man he is today.

Where The Red Winged Blackbirds Sing

Author: Jennifer Bess
Editor: University Press of Colorado
ISBN: 1646421051
File Size: 79,26 MB
Format: PDF, Docs
Read: 4440

Where the Red-Winged Blackbirds Sing examines the ways in which the Akimel O’odham (“River People”) and their ancestors, the Huhugam, adapted to economic, political, and environmental constraints imposed by federal Indian policy, the Indian Bureau, and an encroaching settler population in Arizona’s Gila River Valley. Fundamental to O’odham resilience was their connection to their sense of peoplehood and their himdag (“lifeway”), which culminated in the restoration of their water rights and a revitalization of their Indigenous culture. Author Jennifer Bess examines the Akimel O’odham’s worldview, which links their origins with a responsibility to farm the Gila River Valley and to honor their history of adaptation and obligations as “world-builders”—co-creators of an evermore life-sustaining environment and participants in flexible networks of economic exchange. Bess considers this worldview in context of the Huhugam–Akimel O’odham agricultural economy over more than a thousand years. Drawing directly on Akimel O’odham traditional ecological knowledge, innovations, and interpretive strategies in archives and interviews, Bess shows how the Akimel O’odham engaged in agricultural economy for the sake of their lifeways, collective identity, enduring future, and actualization of the values modeled in their sacred stories. Where the Red-Winged Blackbirds Sing highlights the values of adaptation, innovation, and co-creation fundamental to Akimel O’odham lifeways and chronicles the contributions the Akimel O’odham have made to American history and to the history of agriculture. The book will be of interest to scholars of Indigenous, American Southwestern, and agricultural history.
